Welding robots, also known as automated welding, are the process of using programmable mechanical tools to weld and process a component automatically. Welding robots have brought advantages in many aspects, which is why they have been developed to such an extent.

Replacing human welders with robots

Currently, welders work with a wage ranging from 500,000 to 600,000 Vietnamese Dong per day (equivalent to 12 – 15 million Vietnamese Dong per month), which is considered relatively high compared to workers in other fields. In addition, workers also need to use specialized machinery for their work, resulting in high investment costs for businesses. Moreover, experienced welders are becoming more independent, while young workers lack experience and have limited knowledge, which requires significant time and effort for initial training. Manual welding can lead to reduced welding quality due to variations in the physical condition and skills of human workers, making it difficult to ensure consistent quality for all products. The welding environment is also hazardous due to the emission of gases and heat radiation, which poses significant risks to the health and safety of workers. During the hot season from March to October, the high temperature, combined with the heat generated during welding, makes workers uncomfortable and exhausted, leading to increased rest time and interruptions in the production process, potentially causing delays in the factory’s progress.

Impact on the production landscape of businesses

For manufacturing companies, optimizing work efficiency and minimizing costs are always challenging issues that need to be addressed. The overall picture of a business is greatly influenced by production decisions.

  • Investment aspect: Most businesses consider investing in machinery and robots as expensive and often overlook their long-term benefits. The cost of a new robot ranges from 600-700 million Vietnamese Dong, with a useful life of up to 7 years, significantly improving the convenience and efficiency of business operations. Typically, manufacturing companies incur an annual labor cost of 150 million Vietnamese Dong per worker, and there are usually a considerable number of welding workers. In the first two years, the welding robot will depreciate by approximately 30% (around 200 million Vietnamese Dong over 2 years). Therefore, by investing in robots, businesses can save around 100-200 million Vietnamese Dong per year, depending on the number of robots and workers in the factory.
  • Operation aspect: During operation, businesses primarily require technicians to coordinate activities through robots, helping them achieve consistent production, easy control, and better alignment with actual plans.

Product quality

By utilizing welding robots in production, businesses can achieve the following advantages in product quality

  • Stability in quality: Robot-assisted production allows for seamless control of the welding process, eliminating the impact of human factors.
  • High efficiency and accuracy: Robots can work continuously without rest, handle tasks in challenging positions, and are not affected by hazardous welding fumes.
  • Measurability and control: Robot-assisted production ensures consistent product quality and enables pre-production inspections before the final product is released.
  • Production planning: It becomes easier to predict and plan production since the productivity and product quality can be specified accurately.

In summary, it can be said that welding robots have greatly assisted businesses in solving production problems, improving their capabilities, and creating opportunities for further advancement and value creation in the global supply chain.
